William Stanlake was awarded his Victoria Cross during the Crimean War:
While walking in the Camberwell Old Cemetery recently, I met with Mr. Roger Church, a local resident, who told me that his favourite grave in the cemetery is that of Private William Stanlake who was a hero of the Crimean war and received a V.C. Mr. Church showed me the grave. To find it, walk through the main gate and up to the second of the green lanes and turn right, you will soon see it on the right, at the end of a path that has been cleared to it.
William Stanlake was in the Coldstream guards. His act of heroism was to creep to the Russian front line and make an assessment report. He was buried in a paupers grave but in 1988 the place of his burial was located and a memorial stone erected which was replaced by the present one in 2012.
Mr. Church told me that the London branch of the Coldstream guards visit this grave twice a year.

We're finding more interesting graves in the Camberwell Old Cemetery. For instance in Square 72 (Look behind the hedge on the right just after entering via the main gate ) we found the grave of Nellie wife of Nelson Tobias Francis late Manager of the Empress Theatre Brixton. " Beloved by all who knew him. " The grave is lying on the ground and is made of what looks like pink granite. There is quite a lot of information about the Empress Theatre. We would love to know more and sadly it no longer exists being knocked down in 1992. It was near the Brixton Road in Brighton Terrace, corner with Bernays Road. ( near Morleys ) It was opened in 1910 and Mr. Francis died on the 15th February 1926 at the age of 74. From the photos of it it looks to have been a pretty large venue. If anyone knows anything about Mr. Francis or Nellie do please let us know.
